Prof. Eshchar Mizrachi is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Genetics and Microbiology and the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI) at the University of Pretoria. He has published widely research in the field of plant biology, evolution and biotechnology, and his work focuses on studying the biology and evolution of indigenous South African plant species. He has been deeply involved in Science Leadership training, mentorship and networks for early-career researchers on the African continent and globally. He is also an artist and has exhibited and sold his work. His pursuits (scientific, artistic and intersections thereof) wish to highlight the intrinsic value of nature, and draw inspiration from themes of biological, cultural and epistemic diversity. Most recently he has been doing work at the intersection between ecological, economic and cultural aesthetics and justice, and developing an accompanying framework to consider how we achieve justice at the intersection of two of the fastest growing economies of the next few decades – the bioeconomy and creative economy. Today’s injustice is apparent in many sectors of these economies, with policy (or lack thereof), actions and products that are exclusionary and/or exploitative of Peoples and Nature.
